The Overflow

Updated: Oct 22

Today's Fun Fact: When Glass breaks, the Cracks move at 3000mph.

Last week, I shared the dangerous prayer: "Give me eyes to see as You see." This week, I wanted to go even deeper and talk about our Source.

In Revealed Fire, the third book of the Revealed Book Series, Maddie asks Sonya how she can be strong for others when so many difficult things are happening around her.

"You must go to the Source," Sonya said.Maddie furrowed her brows together, confused over her mentor's answer. "What do you mean, the Source?""Close your eyes with me and picture a pyramid of clear glasses stacked one on top of another. At the top of the pyramid there is one glass with a Pitcher poised above. Out of the Pitcher flows a never-ending supply of clear and refreshing Water."Now, watch the water as it fills the top glass—higher and higher the level rises until it overflows into the two glasses below. The two glasses overflow into the three below them. The flow is beautiful. It's almost as if each row of glasses happily overflows into the next." Maddie opens one questioning eye as Sonya pauses in her story. Surprised to see a glass of water in front of her and Sonya mysteriously gone, she sneaks a sip. Maddie quickly closed her eyes when her leader walked back into the room."As the water flows, you are enamored with the process, until something strange happens." Maddie jumped as she heard a loud crash in front of her. Her heart pounding, she opened her eyes to see Sonya pouring out a zip log bag full of broken glass onto the table."One of the glasses in the center begins to crack," Sonya continued, "I ask the person beside me, 'What happened?' "'The owner of the glass covered the opening,' he told me and to my dismay, the glass cracked into a million little pieces below."A pregnant pause caused Maddie to open her eyes once more. The sadness on Sonya's face was evident. She looked to be a million miles away."I grieved in that moment," she said sadly."What did you do?" Maddie asked.Sonya looked at her charge and said, "I didn't know what to do, but it's what happened next that encouraged my heart. You see, my Companion looked at me with great love in His eyes and proceeded to pick up the pieces from the floor and before my eyes He molded them back together. Every-single-piece. Once complete, He lovingly placed it back in line with the others. It wasn't long before I began to see the water flow once again."Maddie began to see where her mentor was going. "Was it Jesus?" She asked hopefully.Sonya gave a slight smile as she cleaned up the broken pieces and placed them back in the bag. "I looked at Him in awe. He chuckled and said, 'As long as You allow My Living Water to enter in, the refreshing flow will be constant.'""Living Water?" Maddie asked."Jesus said that whoever drinks the water He gives them will never thirst. This water will be a spring of water welling up to eternal life.'"Leaning forward, Maddie placed her chin on her hands and asked, "Why did it stop?""That's what I asked.  'I will never force myself on someone who does not want me in their lives,' He told me. The broken glass decided to make its own way—until it couldn't.'"Maddie frowned as she thought of people in her life who didn't want Jesus. She couldn't understand it, he brought so much peace, but it was hard to explain to others who didn't feel as she did. "Does He mend every glass?" Maddie asked quietly.Sonya poured water into two rows of stacked glasses between them. Her eyes looked sad as she gazed longingly at each one glinting in the soft light. "What do you see?" A bit confused over the question, Maddie asked, "Glasses full of water?""Yes, but what are the glasses on top doing?" Sonya questioned lovingly."Ohhh, they're overflowing into the glasses below them.""That's right. For every glass that allows God's Living Water to overflow out of them, they will see a harvest.""Harvest? From water?"Sonya looked seriously into her eyes as she said, "Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them. The living Water is God's Spirit—out of His Spirit comes fruit. The more You receive God's Spirit and the Fruit He pours out, the greater the harvest of fruit." Pointing to the water once more, she said, "See the water as love. As you receive, love overflows out of you. As you give it away, God's Spirit pours out more.""Whoa," Maddie's mind was blown."Yeah, double whoa," Sonya chuckled. "So, you asked me how I stay strong. Well, I have to go to the Source. I am a vessel for my God—as long as I stay connected to Him and allow His Spirit to pour into me—well, I have all I need to pour out to those in front of me."

The example shared by Maddie's mentor, Sonya, is a vision the Lord gave me in a particularly difficult season of my own. The fruits of the Spirit took on a whole new meaning afterward.

Do you strive for connection through people-pleasing or a sense of responsibility? It's okay to confess; this is a safe place. If I can be honest, this was my MO for many years.

But the Lord wants to flip the script for all of us. So join me in placing your hands in a receiving position and ask Him to pour out His Spirit and the fruit He has for you.

And don't forget to check out today's download—five free Phone wallpapers to remind you of the living water that is free for us all.

My heart has grieved over the images from the storms on the East Coast, but for every tragic story, there are two more of God's Light shining through. Thank you to every person who has willingly received God's love and kindness and poured it out to those suffering.

May we all be fully surrendered in a receiving posture to our King who wants to love through us.

A Prayer for you:

Abba Father, so many are hurting today and need Your peace. Lord, please help us to receive all of the fruit You have to pour out through us and give us eyes to see those in whom You want to use us to pour through. We are vessels ready to serve where You lead. May we be one, Father, just as You are in Christ and He is in You. May we walk unified in You so the world will know You love them. Thank You. In Jesus' Name, we pray, amen.
